Firing your gun....

After you fix it up.. and a good inspection.. and you feel safe enough.. I'd fire it. Knowing you want to fire it.. I'd frst put a .457 405 grain bullet through it. It will probably keyhole on you and not hit the broad side of a barn.. but you will have accomplished wanting to fire it. Use only black powder.. perhaps as much as 50 grains.. maybe only 40? Depends on you. I shoot all mine.. but only get them if the barrel and such is sound. I do have a P1853 Enfield from the Nepal armory that I still need to clean up.. and I intend to let that bullet fly! Probably will put it in a bench vice first and a line attached to the trigger.. then give it a pull with a slightly undersized round ball.

Good luck what ever you do. If it looks bad.. side on the error of safety or nothing.
