I think I just inherited a Springfield Trapdoor

Posted by Bill Corn on Sunday, 16 January 2011, at 9:51 p.m.

So I think I just inherited a Springfield Trapdoor. It is terribly rusted so I can't yet see any markings. I remember this gun from my grandfather's porch. Unfortunately, someone had made a floor lamp of it. Anyway, the hammer spring is strong and trigger mechanism works fine. The breach is rusted shut. I am determined to restore it for my winter project (I live in Minnesota, so I need something to do when it is 10 below outside). I've read the info on this site regarding restoration and I'm looking for someone to bounce questions off when I get stuck. I have pictures if anyone is interested in taking a look at it in its current condition.

My first challenge is to start removing the rust. I need to know what the finish is supposed to look like so I know when I get there. In one spot where the rust isn't so bad it looks like the finish is a steel color as opposed to blued. Any help with suggestions for rust removal would be appreciated.
