Hi Dick,

Thanks so much for the quick response. I got out the bright light and magnifier and it looks like the number is a 5 digit and the last mark is just from wear. It also looks like the number is 12658 and that is all. I am guessing that a repair has been made on the rifle and the value is somewhat diminished. The block and receiver are perfectly flush. It is a good fit.

Would you recommend that I just enjoy looking at it or is it something I should buy cowboy ammuniton for and shoot?

The gun has sentimental value as it was a gift from my father-in-law.
