Just off the top of my head, if he was part of a Kansas volunteer unit to fight Indians between 1868-69, that was most likely the 19th Kansas Vol. Cav. raised to assist the 7th Cav. during this period. They were to assist the 7th in the raid on Black Kettle's camp on the Washita in OK. but got lost in a snowstorm enroute to Camp Supply & missed the raid. If indeed this is the fellow, a request of military records can be made through Topeka KS. I have records on a member of the 19th also.
