Why are you "reluctant" - do you think it was stolen from someone who would want their property back? VERY sorry to put it like that, but, that is EXACTLY what you - very probably entirely unwittingly - just said. FWIW, the government lost interest in tracing those about a hundred years ago.

But, that makes no difference as to ID, you either have a Model 1868 Rifle, made in 1869 (and that date will be found atop the breechblock) or a Model 1869 Cadet Rifle, made in 1870 (in which case THAT date will be atop the block).

Odds are it is the former, having a barrel length of 32-5/8". The Cadet has a 29-5/8" barrel, no sling swivels, and is fairly uncommon with only about 3420 made.
