The rod should be cut at the end to .450 for about an inch up the shaft. The next inch should be .451 and the third inch should be .452. That way, the rod should always start and if the bore is not .451, it will stop after the first inch. If it is not .452, it will stop at the second of travel. Springfield's method was a tapered rod. However, that is more difficult to make than a rod with several steps.
