Since it is a family gun, we know it is not stolen, so, there should not be a problem in quoting the serial number. The more we know, the more we can help.

For "low" to mean anything as to value, you need to be talking one, two, or three digits - but, those arms which APPEAR to read "1878" (use some magnification in a good light - it's really "1873") are all numbered MUCH higher (six digits) so it appears some parts may have been swapped around?

I'd suggest taking a look at the classified ads to see what rifles in the condition of yours (be honest there!) are selling for.
