Re: Bore diameter

I have the Springfield gauge that H. Hastings used as the Master Machinest in 1885. It is a tapered rod from .450 to .455 with etched markers to show the diameter. With it, the bores that I have measured range from .450 to .451 right at the muzzle. I also have his .450" gauge that fits into the barrel about 4 inches.

What you could do is have a machinest cut a piece of brass rod at three different diameters such as .450. .451 and .452 such that you can slip it into the bore until it stops and you will know the diameter ot within .0005"
