serial number range

Posted by Wolfgang Dicke, Germany on Tuesday, 7 December 2010, at 6:32 a.m.

Recently I obtained a TD Carbine M 1873 with all the early features like short comb, no hole drilled in stock, early hammer, narrow breech block marked US/MODEL/1873, early sights, stack swivel, serial number 71085. According to the Springfield Armory listing the receiver was made in the third quarter of 1876, but the cartouche reads ESA/187... The last digit is not clearly readable, I suspect this to be a "7". Now to my question:

Am I right to assume that this was one of the last unaltered M 1873 carbines made early (probably January) 1877?
