I'm working from memory, but here goes.

The rod you describe with the flat head was the first type of rod for the M1873. The concave/dished out head came later, as a way to protect the firing pin from being damaged by the rod. Exactly when the change occurred, I don't remember, but it was after sn 50,000.

That early rod is a bit hard to find, and worth about 150 buxs.
