Lite Barrel

Posted by james meredith on Monday, 6 December 2010, at 1:27 a.m., in response to Re: 1873 Trapdoor Serial Number, posted by Dick Hosmer on Sunday, 5 December 2010, at 6:37 p.m.

Does anyone know if Sringfield Armory ever produced a lite barrel that would fit a trapdoor wide receiver. I have one that is .775" in diameter at the first rear site screw and .635" at the muzzle. It is 21" long and has a front sight base similar to an 1873 sight base, only 1/8" taller. In the area were the proof marks should be, there is a 4 stamped in. It has 6 lands and 6 grooves, which is different from an 1873.

I was told it was assembled by a sub inspector, W A Walker, who used a scrap 45 cal. barrel that was unchambered. He had it chambered in 45acp Rim for his young son around 1920. I realise it is just a project gun, but I am curious about the barrel. Thanks, Jim
