type of rod?

Posted by Fred on Sunday, 5 December 2010, at 10:29 p.m.

I went to Cabela's tonight with my wife and looked at a trapdoor Springfield. Can't remember the number, but it had an 1879 rear sight, sharp 1883 SWP cartouche, late 1873 breech block, sharp P in the circle under the wrist and everything looked really good on it except the 1879 cleaning rod was replaced with what I guess is an early 1873 knurled head, double shoulder rod except that it had a hollow or concave tip on the end of the head instead of a solid one. I've been out of circulation on trapdoors lately, so can anyone please tell me when this rod came out? I would guess just before the change over to the 1879 rod. Oh yea, it did have the knurling at the end of the rod for grasping too.
