It did not leave Springfield Armor as a complete rifle that way.

The easiest explanation is that someone removed the serial number during a refinishing project, or to clean off pitting, or to conceal the number for some reason. Never underestimate the strange things that Bubba with some simple tools can create.

A less likely scenario is that it was among the unfinished or scrap receivers sold off by the Armory, and later cobbled together by Bannerman or Schuyler Hartley & Graham into complete arms.

One final possibility is that the receiver is from an Officers Model rifle, which were not numbered, but it is more likely that you will win the lottery without buying a ticket.
