These low serial numbered receivers on 1891 produced M88 rifles are all wide receivers. Remember in the great turn-in starting in late 1879, Springfield cleansed itself of all the narrow receiver guns in their arsenal, new or repaired. So, you would not expect any M88s to have narrow receivers.

Why 1891 was chosen for utilizing the older receivers is still an unknown, but the low serial numbers are always associated with the 1891 cartouche date.
