I beleiive SA discovered that the .45-70-405 was not burning all its' powder when they chanced to do some firing over snow. That may be what you are remembering.

The .45-80-500, under test in the LRR, was a very hard kicker, and not as accurate, or as efficient, as the .45-70-500, which, of course was the final combination adopted.
