The VP over an eagle head is the normal barrel proof marking on all the later trapdoors.

No documented history on 405422, but all numbers nearby are for rifles, not carbines. Most were in use by various volunteer units in the Spanish American War, but a few were listed as donations the the U.S. Navy in 1943, POSSIBLY for conversion to line throwers, but that is not certain.
