Check to see if the bore has rifling (Three very wide lands and grooves, not the modern narrow lands and wide grooves.)

My bet is that it is a rifle that was altered for use as a line throwing gun, and they usually had the bore reamed smooth.

If still rifled, it is just proof that anyone with a hacksaw can make guns shorter, and unfortunately destroy most of the value in the process.
