Hi Robert – Your serial number indicates that your receiver was manufactured Apr. - Jun. of 1886. The inspector’s stamp on the left side of stock, just behind the receiver, should contain the date of final inspection of your 1884. If the stamp is not there, it indicates your stock has been sanded during refurbishment. I checked your serial number 317982 and did not find it in the SRS Serial Numbers Of U.S. Martial Arms books which means that you probably will not be able to find information on the unit that your rifle was issued to and when. The serial number 317981 was listed in the SRS books. It was listed as 84B(Rod Bayonet), issued on 07/12/1892 to Co G, 10th INF. Your number being a consecutive number to 317981 does not mean it was issued to the same unit. Enjoy your research. Jim
