US 1884 help

Posted by robert on Tuesday, 16 November 2010, at 10:44 a.m.

I purchased a 1884 from an estate sale this past weekend. I know nothing about these guns. It looked interesting so I purchased it. After doing some research and reading some posts they look like fun guns to own. I would like to try to get some information about it age, where its been ect... It's SN: is 317982 and it has a letter "U" in the barrel band. I can also see a "VP" on the barrel. I figure these are inspection stamps. It also has "US 265" stamped in the steel on the buttstock. I figure military rack number is this correct. If so how do I find out what unit had this gun? I'm military and that would be cool to know. It's missing the cleaning rod from the stock and the front barrel band is missing. Also the firing pin looks bent downward slightly is this normal? I saw the same bend in some photos of other 1884's yesterday. Anyway I'm interested in shooting this gun but would like to have some information first. If I can't shoot it, it will look great on the wall as it's in great shape. Thanks for the help.
