Yes, there is a screw through the wood into a lug brazed to the barrel.

The .45-70 shot cartridges were used in conventional rifles and carbines.

The true "Forager" was made (about 1380 of them, 1882-1885) in 20ga. You may see examples of both the gun and cartridges on my web-page: wwwDOTpicturetrailDOTcom
