Custer Carbines

Posted by Jack Lewis on Sunday, 7 November 2010, at 6:54 p.m.

Fact number 1, 2000 carbines were shipped to RIA to be distributed to the 2d,3d, 7th cavalry on feb 14th 1874. Now using this fact and looking at serial numbers provided by Frank Mallory and SRS, you will get a perfect idea of the serial number ranges that were issued to the 7th Cavalry as well as the other units. Fact number 2, No more carbines or Colt SA's were shipped to RIA for the same distribution to the same units above until September of 1876. Now I wander why this distribution was made? Do you think they needed resupplied. Once again using this data and the production data on this site and Franks serial number data, you can get very close.

All of this can be verified by copies of letters from Benton to Col Flagler at RIA.
