There is a very good reason why none of your books show a "Model 1883". There wasn't one!

Read FAQ #8 on the home-page (link below). Such rifles DO exist, but they were NOT made at SA, and would NEVER have been issued to troops.

I believe that your friend's family's oral history has, sadly, become distorted with the pasage of time. Not saying the gentleman didn't own it, but he absolutely did NOT carry it in the service - as it is now configured.
