Thanks for the help. Dis-assembly and cleaning the surface dirt I have no problem but getting more aggressive then oil and a rag make me nervous because most of the advice I have read includes descriptions with color. I'm a bit color blind and I don't always know if I'm seeing the same color being described.

The stock is as you guessed, dark except for a small spot toward the butt end. It looks like something dripped on it and is lighter in color. Linseed oil doesn't seem to blend the colors together. It's as if the stock has something other then an oil finish and what ever dripped has disolved some of it.

Since I'm new to all this, I will probably wait for a day to get an experts opinion.
