Thanks for taking the time to compile your excellent response. Having been an engineer for 40 years, I appreciate your organization and detail.

If I understand you correctly, neither your rifle nor your carbine have periods after the U and S on the breech blocks. Very interesting. The blocks on all three of my guns have periods as I described earlier. I'll take a second, harder look at the thumbpieces on my guns when Dick's survey arrives.

I wish my M70 carbine were in as good a shape as yours. Mine definitely "went through the war". Only a small part of the cartouche is visible due to heavy wear and the stock has a major repair that appears to have been made long before the early 1970's when I bought the gun. There is virtually no blackened finish on my carbine, but fortunately it hasn't been "cleaned" with a wire brush.
