Well, it's not like fakes started to be made on July 5, 1922 and ceased on September 10 1961 :)

The earliest record of fake Trapdoors I am aware of is the mid 1880's, where surplus dealers bought condemned TD parts and assembled rifles from those parts. And, since faking continues to this day, one could say that it has been almost continuous from the start.

Keep in mind that some, perhaps many of the fakes, were not made with the intention of faking but rather to customize the gun to the owners liking at the time. This is probably more true of the older "fake"/modified trapdoors you see.
