What IS the serial number? There SHOULD have been no new (unstarred) carbines made in 1882, so perhaps the stock and receiver do not belong to each other?

If you have a provenance back to the late 30's, any such mismatch would have been completely innocent, as faking TDs for fun and profit was still 30 years in the future.

Another thought - do you really have a proper carbine? A very well-done cut-off, made up for hunting, with NO thought of "fakery" as we undrstand the term today, just might be another possibility?
