1873 Rifle SN 46974

Posted by JasonZ in MO on Monday, 1 November 2010, at 12:17 a.m.

This evening I picked up a new/old trapdoor. SN 46974. It was given to a girl in 1940 who has owned it until today. The stock is solid but beat up a bit. Everything I have learned tells me it's all original. Everything checks out to fall into the 46xxx range. I removed the action and I can not find any proof markings on the barrel at all. The rear site is original with un-tampered slotless screws. The receiver to barrel witness/index mark is dead nutz on. But the barrel has NO other markings. What's the deal??? The steel isn't perfect but not a rusted heap, could the marks have been light enough to disappear with wear, *light* rust, and time? Actually, the bottom of the barrel is nice bright metal but nothing...

I ordered Al's books, with they answer my question?

Jason
