Hello Dick,

As Jack Lewis has said, this is proving to be a VERY interesting series (and also a very informative one for those relative novices among us). In the way of resource material (if needed), I have my M1868 and M1870 Rifles and M1869 Cadet S/N 473 (with the SRS Letter from Charlie Pate regarding its having been returned to the Springfield Armory in January of 1884 from the Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst), as well as my M1870 Carbine. And I can't remember what markings are on the bottom of the barrel - - or whether the spoon is even there - - but I did disassemble the gun several years ago and took notes relating to what I had found and would be pleased to repeat the disassembly, if it would help.

Anyway, it sounds as though a questionnaire would be an excellent idea, so once you have your ideas firmed up I will certainly be quite pleased to furnish any and all information you need. With very best personal regards,

PETE
