Re: trial rifles

can anyone explain why my 1870 with the matching 17/17 on the side in the deep stamping also has the cleaning rod retaining spoon? I've seen this feature along with the M68 rear band on two other rifles with similar number stampings. My rifle has the single shouldered rod and the 68 rear band as I've stated before along with the thin breech block with MODEL 1870. Could me rifle be an early type II? Did the type I rifles also have the retaining spoon in them?
