More likely all (or nearly all) the M1870 trial rifles got sold and shipped to France along with every other obsolete or semi-obsolete military arm the U.S. Army and Navy could dump out of their inventory for a very good price.

Ed Hull did a magnificent article in Gun Report or Man At Arms a few years ago on the subject. I don't recall if he mentioned the 1870 trials rifles, but it would be worth checking. Ed is a thorough researcher and may have learned more since that was published.

Eventual disposition after sale to the French may be something more of a mystery, but it is possible they ended up in the heart of Africa or some other colonial backwater, lost from the collector market.
