Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number

I was looking at a Springfield Model 1884 at the gun shop today. Serial # on the receiver is 536790. The cartouche from what I could see was stamped with inspector initials with 1891 below. The barrel from receiver to area before muzzle and bayonet was made of wood. I was told this was a military gun for bayonet training. The gun is in very good condition. The asking is $300. Have you heard of such guns? or should I look for a replacement barrel and make it a shooter?? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you PJM
