US Model 1873? Help!

Posted by Carl Jurenka on Saturday, 23 October 2010, at 6:15 p.m.

Hello:

I hope that you can help me identify this rifle that I have had for over 40 years.

It is a U.S. Springfield Trapdoor rifle, U.S.Model 1873, serial # 202539.

Between the two rear sights, it says VP followed by a head of an eagle. Off to the side is a P. On top of the stock, towards the back is 1 D, then US. On the left side. above the trigger, in a box, in capital letters, is SWP, 1882. On the bottom of the stock, back of the trigger is capital letter D. Inside of the trigger guard is a capital E and an A or P (I'm not sure) letters. The barrel is 32 5/8th inches long. The bayonet is triple sided with the capital letters US on the bottom flat of the bayonet and a S near the part that attaches to the rifle.

It's my understanding that this rifle came from Fort Assinniboine near Havre, MT., where I use to live for years and years before retiring.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if additional information is needed. Thank you in advance

Carl
