Model 1884 info

Posted by John Smutnick on Friday, 22 October 2010, at 1:41 p.m.

I have a Springfield model 1884, serial number 546249. On top of the stock just behind the hammer is the number 336 in white numerals stamped into the wood. On the right side of the stock the number 23 is stamped into the stock (3/4 inch numerals). On the left side of the stock above the trigger are what appears to be the letters LWP (in cursive) and the year 1892 surrounded by a rectangle, all stamped into the stock. The rifle has a bayonet and sling rings, but no sling. Also an unknown previous owner had tapped the numbers 1,5, and 16 on right side of the stock. They appear to indicate a tally of some sort.

I have kept the rifle in a gun cabinet for over 40 years and it is in good/very good condition.

Any information about this rifle would be appreciated. Thank you.
