Thanks Dick. The rifle is still at my aunts house and she's getting nuttier than a fruit cake and starting to drift around the bend a little. When I spoke to her over the phone about four years ago, she'd had the rifle in her hands and was trying to find the serial numbers on the left side. I didn't tell her that the number there was a "serial number" because I didn't want to tip the old gal off about the rarity of the rifle. The rifle did indeed have the date of 1868 on the top of the breech block, but she couldn't make out the numbers on the side, possibly because of a built up patina obscuring them. Oddly, I recall that the crown appeared to show a brazed barrel liner. A closer look at it when I get my hands on it will be needed.
