I have a first model, high-arch breechblock that I was going to use on my carbine project. It was sold to me as a re-color cased SH&G block. It is in very nice shape, but the markings didn't quite look right to me. At first glance, it looks proper as it has all the correct markings-- eagle, arrows, Model 1873, US, etc. I carefully examined the markings under magnification last night and I could see very faint remnants of the original markings under the newly stamped (or engraved) markings. It had clearly been remarked at some time. Has anyone seen anything like this? Did SH&G remark some of its breechblocks before color-casing them?... or could it all be of more recent vintage? Regardless, it looks like I will have to start looking for another breechblock. Bill M.
