I'd just keep working on it.

Who knows what combination(s) of early smokeless, and nasty primer residue, it was subjected to?

Try different solvents. JB bore paste? I've even used FINE steel wool on a brass brush. Not easy to do, but I'd stop my heaviest cleaning about 2-3" short of the muzzle. This would mean having a long enough rod (and short enough brush) to be able to fit and remove same from the rear end.

Or, does it shoot to your satisfaction now? If it is clean enough to not be embarrassing to show to a friend, AND it shoots OK, maybe you SHOULD stop? Kinda your call at this point.
