I'd have to think it was an alloy being tested, not unlike the infamous "Bloomfield Gilding Metal". From some random Googling, I can tell you that there was or is a supplier of bronze materials, with the name of Manhattan Metal Works, now (always?) in Maspeth, NY. I also have the 1878 and 1879 RCOs, but have not looked there yet, as I'd imagine you have already done so. What does Guy Hildebrand say?
