There are people here who will help you that are far more expert than I, but I can tell you that your "starred" (the star after the serial number) Model 1873 is probably a carbine (short barrel, only one barrel band) and was rebuilt at the Springfield Armory from earlier built guns and new parts. You can read more about these unique guns in the FAQ section of this web site.

The rounded box on the left stock is the inspector's mark -- Samuel W. Porter -- and 1881 is the date the gun was rebuilt.

I too have one of the "starred" carbines and the only original part is the barrel band. All other parts are characteristic of new guns in that serial range (the rebuilt guns were given new serial numbers).
