any info on a gun from my grandfather

Posted by m sparks on Monday, 6 September 2010, at 4:04 p.m.

I have an 1873 Springfield that my grandfather gave me about 50 years ago and I just put it in the attic. He ran a grocery & in 1940ish a mountain man need some groceries and traded him the gun. My grandfather had no need for the gun so he put it in a corner behind a huge walk in meat cooler. It stayed there from 1840 to about 1960 when he sold the store. During inventory he came across the gun again. I was 20 and interested so he gave it to me to cleanup and then just gave it to me. It is in excellent shape, rifling is great etc.

Details are 1873 Springfield in the right-front side plate. Serial # 152682 & a 5-star symbol. On the left-back side is faintly impressed a rounded square box with what looks(???) like a fancy-script “SWP” and below that is 1887 or 1881.

I am just trying to get an estimate for it before I give it to my oldest son. I have been told there were so many made it was only worth a couple hundred $ to $2,000.00.

Any help would be appreciated.
