There is some rudimentary info in the 1898 DRM - with service load you'd need TWENTY (20) boards at 100 yds!

If your intent is to catch each and every bullet, you'd probably be better off with around 24, just to be sure.

The 1879/80 Sandy Hook tests (a fascinating read - Google Sandy Hook 45-70) also have some damp sand penetration data.
