Re: Winchester-Hotchkiss Carbine

Bill, I believe that the whole point of the "x" ersize was to call (hopefully) humorous attention to my failure to quote an exact number - a trait I have severely criticized in other people for many years.

I'd like to know how such a high number came to be on a martial carbine. Only a little over 500 M1878s were made, early on in production. That number SHOULD be up in the "new model" M1879 range. While M1878 stocks WERE converted for later receivers, the receivers themselves cannot be interchanged - the later M1879 rear cross-section is entirely different.

We do not have all of the Hotchkiss answers yet. Even advanced (and I am NOT one) Hotchkiss collectors cannot logically/satisfactorily explain some things.
