Recently aquired 1873 rifle

Posted by Tom on Tuesday, 10 August 2010, at 5:42 p.m.

Hello, I'm very new to this board. I recently was given an 1873 Springfield Trap door rifle, with the 32" barrel. The SN is 4236. It has the VP Eagle stamp on the barrel, along with an "N" on top of the barrel next to the VP Eagle. I've been reading around on this site for a few days, and have not been able to figure out what the N means, or if there is any significance to the SN. I'd love to have a very low SN rifle, but from what I understood, the VP Eagle only came after SN 50,000. Any input you guys may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Tom
