The Thumb piece is indeed pressed on the the shaft. Assuming that you have an "early' thumb latch it would have been ground flush. The thumb piece can be pressed off & a cap installed.

Red Daugherty will have the cap. Call him at 260-833-2315.

The trick will be to get the finished assembly looking good after you press the thumb latch back on. You will need to do some very careful grinding & light polishing to get the surfaces "right". Of course the assembly will need to be reblued also. You can cold blue the area around the repair if you do not have a Gunsmith living just up the street.

Good luck & let us know how it comes out. I have not tried to change a latch on the shaft yet.
