Removing thumbpiece from camshaft?

Posted by Bill M. on Monday, 9 August 2010, at 1:25 p.m.

I have a nice early cam mechanism with the early thumbpiece. The problem is that it is missing the cam cap plate-- I figure it had to have been cut off as the thumbpiece looks like it has never been removed. So my question is-- Assuming I can find another cam cap plate, can the thumbpiece be easily pressed off and then replaced? I am thinking of using an arbor press for this work. Any advice as to making it stay on the shaft once it is removed and put back on? I am assuming that it is peened, once it is installed. And finally--anyone have a cam cap plate they want to part with? Thanks. Bill M.
