Breechblock to Hinge Pin fit

Posted by Charly Busey on Monday, 5 July 2010, at 3:36 p.m.

I have a garden variety 1873 Rifle s/n 277180 that I have taken down to replace a broken extractor spring and pin. In the process of taking it apart I noticed that the hinge pin is somewhat of a loose fit in the breechblock. The pin is not worn and is a consistent diameter. It fits tight in the receiver but allows the breech block to rockside to side ever so slightly. The action looks up tight and I have fired the rifle with compatible loads with out any problems and there is no distortion of the brass. Is this normal or should I be looking at replacing the breech block? Any suggestions?
