There are a few qualified collectors/dealers in various parts of the country who could, I'm sure, render an educated opinion of a particular gun. An awful lot of entry-level fakes (or just plain misunderstandings) can be screened with some GOOD pictures. The better (worse?) ones need hands-on inspection, and I suspect that some REALLY well-done ones have so far escaped detection.
I am not aware of any individual doing such work (specializing solely in TD verification - certainly there is no shortage of licensed appraisors) professionally. In this litigious world, it is not hard to understand why. When one's word may make or break a six-figure sale, one is going to have to carry some pretty significant liability insurance.
I have rendered such opinions for years, but always clarifying that it was an OPINION, and never accepting a consideration. That recently changed - a new acquaintance was, IMHO, openly and brazenly defrauded by a well-known dealer. I wrote an "expert" report, which will be presented in court (unless the case settles) in August, for which a very modest fee was accepted, but doing same full-time has never been considered.
At that time, an attempt was made to enlist the help of others on this board, with, I'm sad to say, mixed results, even though the dealer involved was acknowledged to be "a problem". The impression was that they either did not want to rock the boat, or rat out a fellow dealer.
Fortunately, no such baggage weighs upon the writer - I've assembled my collection and do not need to worry about someone not selling me something, or not buying from me, because I once took a stand against them.
This has wandered, but I hope the response was of SOME help.
