I think that our friend Dick Hosmer probably knows as much about them as anyone, and has the largest database of early carbine numbers.

Of course, our host Al Frasca knows a bit about them as well, having written two books on them and lots of newsletters covering ALL things trapdoor.

Additional advice- avoid the auctions, and buy from reputable dealers with inspection and return privileges. You may pay a bit more than getting a "bargain" on some auction, or finding one loose in the wilds of gun show land, but all too often anything but a reputable dealer can end up buying a very expensive education.

[Full disclosure- I am a dealer and have a Custer range gun listed right now at oldguns.net on the antique longarms catalog.]
