There is a report online about all the follow-up investigations done soon after and years after the battle. I will get back to you all when I find the website. Of interest to me, was George Custer really buried at West Point Academy. Reports from 2 days after the battle said his body was not so hacked up and that his brothers body was buried alongside him. The initial burial was done with care much more so than other bodies. When, later, a body was exhumed, supposedly George's, no such conspiculous care was noted about things buried with that body. So, the mystery remains if Custer is still at the battle site or at West Point. Also, on that website, there are photos of trooper's bodies that were mutilated horrendously. Supposedly, female Indians went to the battle site and did most of the mutilation. More to follow.
