That is a question which will never die. Basically, IMHO, there were just TOO many Indians for Custer's detached group to handle, at their end of the field - Reno did relatively OK, after he got to the high ground. Would more/better firepower have killed enough Indians quickly enough, at the ford, to have them throw in the towel sooner - who knows? They pulled up and left the next day anyhow, after getting wind of Terry's approach.

What would have happened if Terry had moved a little quicker, Custer hadn't been looking ahead to the Democratic convention, and Crook hadn't gone fishing after getting a bloody nose - but not much more - at the Rosebud? The pincer plan MIGHT have worked. But them, if the dog hadn't stopped to pee he would have caught the little rabbit!
