The rifle has a 32.6" barrel, To Earnie's point I believe this was a newly assembled rifle from left over parts that was built and shipped by Springfield Armory in 1898. Since the Krag was already in use it ended up in a military storage somewhere until being sold surplus. When purchased it was covered with storage dust and dirt, decades old. The dust went down the barrel well over a foot. Fortunately it has oil or grease on it under the dirt & dust. A friend of mine has the Springfield Research Books that show many serial numbers in this range that shipped out in 1898. I think this explains it.
